The home of the Big Rock Library on the move across the field in 2003 to its current location.

History

About 1907, Richard Michael moved his wife and children from the farm and constructed the home, which houses Big Rock Library.

Originally, the house was located in Big Rock behind the English Congregational Church at the corner of Lincoln Street and 3rd Street.

After the Michael family sold the home, it had various owners, and the upper floor became a separate apartment, often occupied by young families just starting. Eventually, the Congregational Church bought the house to use for Sunday School rooms.

When the Church decided it needed the property for a parking lot, the house was sold to the Big Rock Historical Society for $1 and moved across the field in 2003 to its current location. After a complete renovation, the house opened as Big Rock Library in 2009.

Donations of materials

We welcome donations of books, DVDs, CDs, and other materials usable in libraries. We make every attempt to place books where they are used—in our collection, at our book sales, donated to several agencies that ask us for books, or contributed to an online book seller.

We are unable to accept sets of encyclopedias or Reader’s Digest condensed books.

Of particular interest now are vintage titles suitable to outfit the one-room school that is being restored and is being erected on the historical society campus.
